From unique races around the world to the best hiking nutrition
Five of the best - because six is passé. This is going to become a running joke. Get it?
Good morning/afternoon wherever you are in the world!
Whether you’re getting your run on today or taking a well earned rest day, I’ve got five of our favourite articles and podcasts from the running world for your delectation.
I’d love it if you could add your recommendations in the comments section below or on our Chat page, and we build up a virtuous circle of the best running content.
So, without further ado and in no particular order, here are my fab five suggestions…
Are women ‘made’ for ultrarunning? Camille Herron seems to think so
This article from Runner’s World takes a fascinating look at whether women are ‘made’ to run long.
Looking at the success of the likes of Camille Herron, Jasmin Paris and Courtney Dauwalter, it also breaks down the science behind the theory.
Community Trail Running Podcast: Making change and growing community
In this podcast episode, Adam Lee speaks to the inspiring Vincent Kuber, whose Steel Town Athletic Club embraces diversity and running for all.
Vincent talks about how the club has expanded into basketball and hiking, as well as how he experienced racism and pushback from some parts of society - including elements of the running community.
Hiking Nutrition 101: How to pick trail snacks that beat the bonk
Hosted on the Cole’s Climb Substack page, this is actually a blog post from physician and writer Doc Anarchy.
It looks at the correct nutrition to have while hiking, breaking it down into both different types of food and various body types/levels of experience.
Although the article is written for hikers, I’d suggest a lot of the advice would also apply to ultra or trail runners.
The Runner’s Resource Podcast: Unique Races
This episode of Michael Nielsen’s Runner’s Resource podcast looks at 10 unique races from across the world, including everything from huge events such as the Marathon des Sables and the Great Wall of China Marathon to those where participants run in only their underwear or up huge towers.
Micheal is a past Running Tales Podcast guest and I’m a massive fan of his podcast, so would encourage you all to check out this episode and the pod in general.
Do Yoga, Run Faster
This TEDx Talk from Ann Mazur looks at how yoga can make us run faster.
The elite runner and founder of Runners Love Yoga says her personal bests started to fall when she did more yoga and less running.
She also talks about the benefits of yoga for core strength, injury prevention and how pigeon pose is a runners’ best friend.
Also on Running Tales:
How one man's Parkinson's diagnosis inspired him to his greatest running achievements
Super Mario - The Ironman who always finishes with a smile on his face
Running Tales on YouTube - Doug Richards: Running 'Once Around the Planet'
You’ll hopefully know by now that the Running Tales Podcast can be found everywhere from Apple, Google Podcasts and Spotify to iHeartRadio, Audible and CastBox - basically anywhere you can listen to podcasts.
