From miscarriages and marathons to running for CALM
Five of the best - because six is passé. This is going to become a running joke. Get it?
Good morning/afternoon wherever you are in the world,
Whether you’re getting your run on today or taking a well earned rest day, we’ve got a new feature for you to inspire you to keep on running.
Every Monday (except for those days when I’m almost certainly going to be late having been really busy at the weekend), I’m going to bring you five stories, articles, videos or podcasts from the world of running that I’ve recently enjoyed - and hopefully you will too.
I’d love it if you could add your recommendations in the comments section below or on our Chat page, and we build up a virtuous circle of the best running content.
So, without further ado and in no particular order, here are my fab five suggestions…
Miscarriage, Mental Health, and Marathons
This piece from the Running Sucks Substack newsletter by Raziq Raif, tells the story of Bethan Pritchard, who has run a marathon in every month of 2023 with the aim of inspiring better communication around motherhood and grief.
It’s an inspiration and informative read - check it out here:
Running for CALM: Meet Tom Mulchinock
I’ve been following Tom Mulchinock’s story for a while now - and we are hoping to have him on as a Running Tales Podcast guest very soon.
Tom is attempting to run 10 marathons in a year to raise money for the charity CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably).
He also puts together some pretty cool running Vlogs on YouTube, such as this one below:
Diz Runs Radio: Nate Hanley rarely turns down a good running adventure
Denny Krahe’s Diz Runs Radio podcast is one of my favourites out there.
In this episode, he speaks to Nate Hanley, an ultra marathoner and adventurer who found one long-distance race simply wasn’t enough:
Crewing the Western States Endurance Run
This article from Sarah Lavender Smith gives some incredible insight into what it’s like to crew a long-distance race.
Part of Sarah’s Colorado Mountain Running & Living newsletter, the post talks about her experience at the recent 100-mile Western States Endurance Run.
It encapsulates both the challenges of crewing and pacing and the pain runners face taking on such a race:
Listening to - and learning about - Grayson Murphy
Grayson Murphy is one of the best runners out there. The two-time mountain running champion only took up the sport at university - but has barely looked back.
When the opportunity came up to interview her for Running Tales (coming soon, folks!), we jumped at it… and then thought we’d better get our research right!
So, it’s only fair to give a big shout out to this excellent chat with Grayson from her own coaches no less at the ‘Some Work All Play’ podcast:
I hope you enjoyed our first ‘five of the best’ selection - remember to add yours in the comments below

Running Tales on YouTube - Rebecca Leek: Working to stop Britain running out of time
You’ll hopefully know by now that the Running Tales Podcast can be found everywhere from Apple, Google Podcasts and Spotify to iHeartRadio, Audible and CastBox - basically anywhere you can listen to podcasts.
But did you know we also publish our podcast episodes in full on YouTube?
Subscribe to our channel by visiting @RunningTalesPod, where you can listen to the stories of runners such as Rebecca Leek, who took part in the Running Out of Time relay.
Our channel also features short video clips from all of our podcast guests, including the story of how Rebecca took note of some top running tips from DJ Chris Evans!
Thanks as ever for reading and listening to Running Tales. We couldn’t do this without your support - please back us to keep going by…
Thanks so much for sharing the story, Craig. Beth really is an inspiration to us all. She's done great work within my friends circle even inside of a week.
